Academy at Shotton Hall

The Academy at Shotton Hall converted to become an academy school on 1st February 2011. When its predecessor school, Shotton Hall School, was last inspected by Ofsted, it was judged to be outstanding. It is a designated teaching school. This academy is larger than the average-sized secondary school. The proportion of students known to be supported by the pupil premium (additional funding for those pupils who are known to be eligible for free school meals, children from service families and those children who are looked after by the local authority) is well above average. A well-below-average proportion of students are from minority ethnic backgrounds, and a similar proportion speaks English as an additional language. The proportion of disabled students and those with special educational needs who are supported through school action is average, whilst the proportion supported at school action plus and with a statement of special educational needs is above average. The academy meets and exceeds the government’s current floor standards, which set the minimum expectations for students’ attainment and progress. The academy has specialist status in the performing arts. Sixty-six Year 10 students attend vocational courses at East Durham College and a very small number of students attend the Green School in Lanchester.

School have teachers in many fields and subjects. In the school we are implementing new curriculum and there we will focused more on the
learning environment and new educational paradigm.

In the school we have one fully equipped IT classroom and in the library have 20 computers. Every classroom have computer and
projectors and the Internet access is wireless in the hole school building. Many of the courses that we teach are on Moodle and some of the students do not attend regular classes but instead are able to work from distance.

In the school we have fab lab (fabrication laboratory), but fab lab is a small-scale workshop offering (personal) digital fabrication. The fab lab is equipped with an array of flexible computer controlled tools that cover several different length scales and various materials, with the aim to make "almost anything". This includes technology-enabled products generally perceived as limited to mass production.

In the Math and Science department are 9 teachers and they are all very qualified and have teaching experience from 3-40 years. They are all interested to developed their skills and become more familiar with new teaching methods and to develop new tools and technology to get their students more interested in their subject and at  the same time more qualified to work with new experience.
